Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic Shorthair is a docile, gentle cat with a soft voice. They are sweet-tempered pets who enjoy sitting on laps and the refined comforts of home. The Exotic is sometimes called the " lazy man's Persian", as it has the same body and head type, but without the daily grooming requirements.

Exotic Shorthair Cat History

Breeders crossed the American Shorthair with the Persian in the United States around 1960. From the beginning, the standard for the Exotic was written with the goal of creating a Persian with a shorter, more care-free coat. Early breeders outcrossed to shorthairs to get the shorthair gene and then continued to take those cats back to Persians to get closer to the Persian standard. As the Persian standard evolved, so did the standard of the Exotic. As Persians became more "typy," so did the Exotic. As the breed became more popular, more and more Persian breeders were willing to allow their lines to be used in Exotic breeding programs and even began breeding Exotics themselves.

During the breeding program, crosses were also made with the Russian Blue and the Burmese. Sufficient outcrosses were being introduced from these breedings to catch the attention of Jane Martinke. She noticed that changes were gradually taking place in the American Shorthair type and coat texture. Jane, with her vision and foresight, saw both the harm that could be done to the American Shorthair breed through the continuation of these outcrosses, and also the possibilities presented by this adorable cat. In 1966, she proposed to the CFA Board of Directors the creation of a new breed. Thus were born shorthaired Persians, called Exotic Shorthairs and recognized by the C.F.A in 1966. The F.I.Fe. recognized the Exotic Shorthair in 1986. Since 1987, the only allowable outcross breed is the Persian.

The Exotic Shorthair has nearly the same body as the Persian, but a thick, dense short coat. They appeal to people who like the personality of a Persian but do not want the hassle of grooming a long-haired cat. They are also known as "The Lazy Man's Persian".
