Gypsy
Horses
In
addition to their stunning looks, the breed possesses a temperament
that is friendly and engaging. The Gypsy Horse was bred to
pull the colorful Gypsy caravans of England. Its docile nature
is a result of necessity; Gypsy Horses have to be patient,
gentle, and quiet in order to be safe for pulling caravans
and carrying Gypsy children, who often ride bareback.

Gypsy Horse
History
This Breed 's
development has been met with a lot of controversy, mainly
over the correct "name" for the breed. This
breed has numerous registry associations and it is being
developed basically online, which has caused a lot of confusion.
Gypsy Horses are referred to as Gypsy Horses,
Gypsy Cobs, Irish Tinkers, Irish Cobs, Gypsy
Vanners, and Coloured Cobs. The are all essentiall the
same horse, with the exception of some horses referred
to only as
"Gypsy-bred".
The Gypsy began
over half a century ago through the selective breeding
of a few dedicated Gypsies to produce a
horse powerful enough to pull the decorative caravans
the Gypsy calls home, yet gentle and trustworthy for the
keeping of their children and worldly possessions. In theory,
the horses utilized for the foundation of
the Gypsy Horse feature three British draft breeds—the
Shire, Clydesdale, and Dales Pony, but it has been suggested
in that the Gypsy Horse’s ancestry may include
other breeds, even non-drafts.
Because of the
breed’s ancestry, Gypsy Horses possess
characteristics from the Shire, Clydesdale, and Dales Pony,
which is the heaviest pony breed in Great Britain. It is
responsible for the breed’s small size and the dainty
head seen on some Gypsy Horses. Typically, a Dales Pony stands
between 14.0hh-14.2hh but weighs around 1,000 pounds. Since
the Shire, Clydesdale, and Dales Pony all have feather, the
Gypsy Horse does also. The source of the Gypsy Horse's extravagant
coloring may be the Shire. Color was fairly common among
Shires until around the 1900s, when solid coat patterns became
fashionable.
The nomadic life the Gypsy Horse was bred for further changed
the breed to the hardy horse we know today, both physically
and mentally. The Gypsy learned to thrive on uncertain forage
from campsite to campsite. Shelter was uncertain which may
have contributed to the flowing feathers, as protection against
the elements. The Gypsy Horse was an integral part of the
family, so tolerance and patience was essential.
Horses that exibited aggressive or spooky behaviour were
not kept
or
bred.
For all
these reasons, the Gypsy Horse qualifies as an excellent
family
horse. Due to the influences of the Dales Pony, the
Gypsy Horse is typically around 14 hands tall. Their
gentle nature, beautiful feathers, long, flowing main and
tail make
them the perfect "My Little Pony"!
